Around this time every year I have the urge to create. Taking all that I’ve learned - about myself, about others - and putting it into words…. art… or maybe a playlist.
Creating isn’t limited to any of these things.
In fact, as I have shared, this time last year I created a new life for myself - a life sans alcohol. I did not expect that to be the case but now I cannot imagine not making that decision for myself because I don’t know what my life would look like. Choosing myself, my health, my faith, my relationships above all else has been an enormous blessing.
Imagine my surprise when I listen to the highly anticipated new Noah Kahan album and the first track End of August has written at the end of the first verse “I tried getting sober I swore I did better this time.”
There are some songs you relate to, but when a lyric hits your life so on the nose like that it is a beautiful reminder that we are all human experiencing the same life in so many different and so many of the same ways at the same time.
In creating a life sans alcohol, I have also created a life of appreciating my able body and moving and getting stronger every day. In the same way I exercise my body, I realize I need to exercise the art of writing and publishing and following through on the hopes and dreams of all versions of Elise past.
As the great Dolly Parton once said, “Find out who you are. And do it on purpose.”
I am a writer, creator, lover, friend, daughter, photographer, artist, and so much more and also not necessarily in that order. It’s all me, all at once.
I have found some tracks that make me feel like myself (and not just because the second one has my name in it). Music makes me feel alive. I hope you feel like you can find the same.
